Articular Cartilage Defect Lateral Compartment Knee

Definition:
A defect in the cartilage covering the articular surface of the lateral compartment of the knee.
Symptoms:
  • Localized or diffuse knee pain
  • Recurrent swelling, locking or catching
  • Pain in the lateral knee
  • Loss of range of motion in the knee
Causes:
  • Fall onto the knee
  • Mechanical malalignment
  • Repetitive jumping
  • Twisting injury
  • Osteoarthritis
Treatment:
  • Possible surgical intervention
  • Progress to knee ROM and strengthening exercises
  • Correct gait mechanics
  • Quadriceps strengthening and stretching
