Articular Cartilage Defect Femoral Trochlea

Definition:
A defect in the cartilage covering the articular surface of the femoral trochlea in a synovial joint.
Symptoms:
  • Localized or diffuse knee pain
  • Recurrent swelling, locking or catching
Causes:
  • Fall onto the knee
  • Mechanical patellar malalignment
  • Repetitive jumping
Treatment:
  • Possible surgical intervention
  • Progress to knee ROM and strengthening exercises
  • Correct gait mechanics
  • Quadriceps strengthening and stretching
