Articular Cartilage Disorder Knee
Definition:
A defect in the cartilage covering the articular surface of the knee in a synovial joint.
Symptoms:
- Localized or diffuse knee pain
- Stiffness in knee
- Decreased ROM in the knee
- Recurrent swelling, locking or catching
- Pain with weight bearing activities
- Pain with descending stairs
- Pain worse with activities
Causes:
- Direct blow to knee
- Wear and tear
- Prolonged periods of immobility
Treatment:
- Knee ROM and stretching
- Lower extremity strengthening exercises
- Correct gait mechanics
- Possible surgical intervention
