Articular Cartilage Disorder Knee

Definition:
A defect in the cartilage covering the articular surface of the knee in a synovial joint.
Symptoms:
  • Localized or diffuse knee pain
  • Stiffness in knee
  • Decreased ROM in the knee
  • Recurrent swelling, locking or catching
  • Pain with weight bearing activities
  • Pain with descending stairs
  • Pain worse with activities
Causes:
  • Direct blow to knee
  • Wear and tear
  • Prolonged periods of immobility
Treatment:
  • Knee ROM and stretching
  • Lower extremity strengthening exercises
  • Correct gait mechanics
  • Possible surgical intervention
