Posterior Dislocation of the Tibia

Definition:
Posterior dislocation of the tibia occurs when there is a direct blow to the tibia while the knee is in a flexed position.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the knee
  • Instability in the knee
  • Swelling in the knee
  • Deformity of the knee
Causes:
  • Direct blow
  • Motor vehicle accident where tibia hits dashboard
  • Falls (runner falling on a flexed knee)
Treatment:
  • Possible period of immobilization
  • ROM and stretching
  • Knee stabilization exercises
  • Lower extremity strengthening exercises
