Posterior Dislocation of the Tibia
Definition:
Posterior dislocation of the tibia occurs when there is a direct blow to the tibia while the knee is in a flexed position.
Symptoms:
- Pain in the knee
- Instability in the knee
- Swelling in the knee
- Deformity of the knee
Causes:
- Direct blow
- Motor vehicle accident where tibia hits dashboard
- Falls (runner falling on a flexed knee)
Treatment:
- Possible period of immobilization
- ROM and stretching
- Knee stabilization exercises
- Lower extremity strengthening exercises
