Chondromalacia Patella

Definition:
'Chondromalacia patellae' (also known as 'CMP') is a term that originates in the early 20th century. It originally meant "soft cartilage under the knee cap", a presumed cause of pain at the front and especially inner side of the knee. This condition often affects young, otherwise healthy individuals.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the front of the knee
  • Pain on the inside of the knee
  • Pain with prolonged sitting
Causes:
  • Chronic friction related to repetitive knee flexion
  • Acute injury to knee
  • Tight iliotibial band
  • Malalignment
  • Bursitis
  • Patellar maltracking
  • Core instability
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching to knee
  • Core stabilization exercises
  • Knee strengthening exercises
  • Foam roll to ITB
