Effusion of the Lower Leg and Knee
Definition:
The escape of fluid from the blood vessels or lymphatic into the lower leg and knee.
Symptoms:
- Pain in the knee
- Swelling in the knee
- Stiffness
- Loss of ROM in the knee
Causes:
- Osteoarthritis
- Injury to the ligaments or meniscus
- Fluid collecting in the bursa (bursitis)
- Infection
Treatment:
- Massage
- Foot elevation
- Cryotherapy
- ROM and stretching exercises
- Knee stabilization exercises
- Lower extremity strengthening exercises
