Myositis Ossificans of the Knee
Definition:
'Myositis ossificans' comprises two syndromes characterized by heterotopic ossification (calcification) of muscle.
Symptoms:
- Loss of ROM
- Pain
- Bruising
- Swelling and warmth at the affected site
Causes:
- Direct blow to muscle
- Premature return to activity after an injury
- Athletes who sustain a blunt injury that causes deep tissue bleeding
- Unknown cause
Treatment:
- ROM and stretching
- Strengthening exercise
- Stabilization exercise
