Myositis Ossificans of the Knee

Definition:
'Myositis ossificans' comprises two syndromes characterized by heterotopic ossification (calcification) of muscle.
Symptoms:
  • Loss of ROM
  • Pain
  • Bruising
  • Swelling and warmth at the affected site
Causes:
  • Direct blow to muscle
  • Premature return to activity after an injury
  • Athletes who sustain a blunt injury that causes deep tissue bleeding
  • Unknown cause
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching
  • Strengthening exercise
  • Stabilization exercise
