Calcification of the Shoulder

Definition:
A process in which tissue or noncellular material in the shoulder becomes hardened as the result of precipitates or larger deposits of insoluble salts of calcium, especially calcium carbonate and phosphate normally occurring only in the formation of bone and teeth.
Symptoms:
  • Pain with reaching overhead
  • Pain with reaching behind back
  • Shoulder pain at night
  • Loss of ROM in the shoulder
Causes:
  • Arthritis
  • Overuse
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching for the shoulder
  • Shoulder stabilization strengthening
  • Posture program
