Villonodular Synovitis of the Shoulder

Definition:
Proliferation of synovial tissue of the shoulder, composed of synovial villi and fibrous nodules infiltrated by giant cells and macrophages.
Symptoms:
  • Swelling in the shoulder
  • Pain in the shoulder, especially with movement
  • Sudden onset
  • Loss of ROM in the shoulder
  • Shoulder feels warm to touch
Causes:
  • Idiopathic
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching
  • Upper extremity strengthening
  • Shoulder stabilization exercises
  • Possible surgical intervention
