Sprains and Strain of Acromioclavicular Ligament
Definition:
An injury to a ligament of the AC/clavicle when the joint is carried through a range of motion greater than normal, but without dislocation or fracture; or an injury resulting from tensile force to muscle or tendon of the AC/clavicle joint.
Symptoms:
Pain in the front of the shoulder Point tender to the AC/clavicle joint Pain with overhead shoulder movements Possible bump on the top of the shoulder
Causes:
Fall on the tip of the shoulder Fall on an outstretched hand
Treatment:
Period of sling use for immobilization Stretching and shoulder ROM exercises Posture program Strengthening shoulder stabilizers
