Sprains and Strain of the Iliofemoral Ligament

Definition:
An injury to the iliofemoral ligament when the joint is carried through a range of motion greater than normal, but without dislocation or fracture; or an injury resulting from tensile force.
Symptoms:
  • Point tender to iliofemoral ligament
  • Pain in the anterior hip
  • Swelling in the anterior hip
  • Bruising in the anterior hip
  • Pain with kicking, standing, walking, running
  • Loss of ROM in the hip
Causes:
  • Poor flexibility
  • Inadequate warm-up before exercise
  • Muscle imbalance
  • Muscle weakness
  • Fatigue
  • Direct blow
  • Repetitive hip movements
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching
  • Soft tissue massage
  • Core and hip stabilization exercises
  • Lower extremity strengthening
