Sprains and Strain of the Ischiocapsular Ligament

Definition:
An injury to the ischiocapsular ligament when the joint is carried through a range of motion greater than normal, but without dislocation or fracture; or an injury resulting from tensile force.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the posterior hip
  • Point tender to ischiocapsular ligament
  • Loss of ROM in the hip
  • Swelling in the posterior hip
  • Pain with walking and standing
Causes:
  • Motor vehicle accident
  • Fall
  • Direct blow
  • Repetitive hip movement
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching
  • Soft tissue massage
  • Hip and core stabilization exercises
  • Lower extremity strengthening
