Sprains of the of the Sacroiliac Ligament
Definition:
An injury to the sacroiliac ligament when the joint is carried through a range of motion greater than normal, but without dislocation or fracture.
Symptoms:
- Pain in the low back
- Point tender on sacroiliac joint
- Swelling in the sacroiliac joint
- Pain with weight distribution
- Muscle spasm
- Referred pain into the lower extremity
- Pain with standing on one leg
Causes:
- Fall
- Motor vehicle accident
- Repetitive micro trauma
- Muscle imbalance
- Prolonged bending or lifting
- Pregnancy
- Problems with knee, hip, ankle
Treatment:
- ROM and stretching
- Core stabilization exercises
- Soft tissue massage
- Lower extremity strengthening
