Villonodular Synovitis of the Hip

Definition:
Proliferation of synovial tissue of the hip, composed of synovial villi and fibrous nodules infiltrated by giant cells and macrophages.
Symptoms:
  • Swelling in the hip
  • Pain in the hip, especially with movement
  • Sudden onset
  • Loss of ROM in the hip
  • Hip feels warm to touch
Causes:
  • Idiopathic
  • Most common in hip and knee
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching
  • Lower extremity strengthening
  • Ankle stabilization exercises
  • Possible surgical intervention
