Calcification of the Hip

Definition:
A process in which tissue or noncellular material in the hip becomes hardened as the result of precipitates or larger deposits of insoluble salts of calcium, especially calcium carbonate and phosphate normally occurring only in the formation of bone and teeth.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the hip
  • Stiffness in the hip
  • Loss of ROM in the hip
Causes:
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Arthritis
  • Wear and tear of the hip joint
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching of the hip
  • Core stabilization exercises
  • Lower extremity strengthening exercises
