Osteoarthrosis of the Foot and Ankle

Definition:
Arthritis characterized by erosion of articular cartilage of the foot and ankle, which becomes soft, frayed, and thinned with eburnation of subchondral bone and outgrowths of marginal osteophytes; pain and loss of function result.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the foot and ankle
  • Stiffness in the foot and ankle
  • Loss of ROM in the foot and ankle
  • Crepitus in the foot and ankle with movement
  • Swelling in the foot and ankle
Causes:
  • Wear and tear
  • Trauma
  • Previous fracture
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching
  • Foot intrinsic muscle strengthening
  • Lower extremity strengthening exercise
  • Gait program
