Villonodular Synovitis of the Foot and Ankle
Definition:
Proliferation of synovial tissue of the foot and ankle, composed of synovial villi and fibrous nodules infiltrated by giant cells and macrophages.
Symptoms:
- Swelling in the ankle
- Pain in the ankle, especially with movement
- Sudden onset
- Loss of ROM in the ankle
- Ankle feels warm to touch
Treatment:
- ROM and stretching
- Lower extremity strengthening
- Ankle stabilization exercises
- Possible surgical intervention
