Anterior Tibialis Tendinitis

Definition:
Inflammation of the tendons attached to the anterior tibialis.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in front of the shin, ankle, and foot
  • Pain with walking, running, or kicking an object with toes pointed
  • Point tender on the anterior tibialis
Causes:
  • Excessive walking or running
  • Repetitive kicking an object with toes pointed
  • Excessive rubbing of tight shoe laces over the anterior tibialis
  • Tightness in calves or anterior tibialis
  • Muscle weakness in lower leg
  • Improper gait or running mechanics
Treatment:
  • Soft tissue massage and stretching
  • Ankle ROM
  • Calf stretching
  • Correct gait and running mechanics
  • Exercises to improve strength and balance
