Flexor Hallucis Longus Tendinitis

Definition:
Inflammation of the tendons attached to the flexor hallucis longus.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the inner ankle and travels into big toe
  • Pain with running, jumping, hopping
  • Stiffness in the mornings
  • Point tender on tendon
Causes:
  • Repetitive toe flexion (Ballet dancers)
  • Traumatic high force toe extension
  • Gradual wear and tear
  • Excessive running
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching exercises
  • Soft tissue massage
  • Foot intrinsic muscle strengthening
  • Calf stretching
