Bunion First Toe

Definition:
A localized swelling at the medial or dorsal aspect of the first metatarsolphalangeal joint, caused by bursal inflammation and fibrosis; usually associated with hallux valgus.
Symptoms:
  • Swelling on the medial great toe
  • Redness on the medial great toe
  • Physical deformity- lateral deviation of the great toe
  • Pain with walking
  • Pain in the great toe joint
Causes:
  • Genetics
  • Tight-fitting shoes
Treatment:
  • Possible surgical intervention
  • Great toe ROM and stretching exercises
  • Foot intrinsic muscle strengthening
  • Calf stretching
  • Correct gait mechanics
