Bunion 5th Toe

Definition:
A localized swelling at the lateral or dorsal aspect of the fifth metatarsolphalangeal joint, caused by bursal inflammation and fibrosis.
Symptoms:
  • Swelling on the lateral 5th toe
  • Redness on the lateral 5th toe
  • Physical deformity- medial deviation of the 5th toe
  • Pain with walking
  • Pain in the 5th toe
Causes:
  • Genetics
  • Tight-fitting shoes
Treatment:
  • Possible surgical intervention
  • Toe ROM and stretching exercises
  • Foot intrinsic muscle strengthening
  • Calf stretching
  • Correct gait mechanics
