Definition:

'Hallux varus' is a deformity of the great toe joint where the hallux is deviated medially (towards the midline of the body) away from the first metatarsal bone. The hallux usually moves in the transverse plane.

Symptoms:

• Physical deformity- medial deviation of the great toe
• Pain with walking
• Pain in the great toe joint

Causes:

• Failure of a previous bunion surgery
• Congenital

Treatment:

• Possible surgical intervention
• Great toe ROM and stretching exercises
• Foot intrinsic muscle strengthening
• Calf stretching
• Correct gait mechanics
