Sprains of the Deltoid Ligament
Definition:
An injury to the deltoid ligament when the joint is carried through a range of motion greater than normal, but without dislocation or fracture.
Symptoms:
- Medial ankle pain
- Ankle weakness
- Swelling in the medial ankle
- Loss of ROM in the ankle
- Bruising in the medial ankle
- Difficult to bear weight
Causes:
- Sudden eversion of the ankle
- Fall
- Awkward landing from a jump
Treatment:
- ROM and stretching
- Soft tissue massage
- Ankle stabilization exercises
- Foot intrinsic muscle strengthening
- Lower extremity strengthening
- Balance program
- Gait program
