Sprains of the Deltoid Ligament

Definition:
An injury to the deltoid ligament when the joint is carried through a range of motion greater than normal, but without dislocation or fracture.
Symptoms:
  • Medial ankle pain
  • Ankle weakness
  • Swelling in the medial ankle
  • Loss of ROM in the ankle
  • Bruising in the medial ankle
  • Difficult to bear weight
Causes:
  • Sudden eversion of the ankle
  • Fall
  • Awkward landing from a jump
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching
  • Soft tissue massage
  • Ankle stabilization exercises
  • Foot intrinsic muscle strengthening
  • Lower extremity strengthening
  • Balance program
  • Gait program
