An injury to the calcaneofibular ligament when the joint is carried through a range of motion greater than normal, but without dislocation or fracture.
Symptoms:
Pain is primarily located on the lateral side of the ankle joint
Ankle swelling
Bruising on the lateral ankle
Presence of joint instability
Audible pop or crack heard at the time of the injury
Possible inability to bear weight on the affected ankle
Causes:
Forceful ankle inversion with foot in neutral position
