Sprains of the Posterior Talofibular Ligmament

Definition:
An injury to the posterior talofibular ligament when the joint is carried through a range of motion greater than normal, but without dislocation or fracture.
Symptoms:
  • Pain in the ankle
  • Swelling in the ankle
  • Bruising in the ankle
  • Difficulty walking
  • Stiffness in the ankle
Causes:
  • Forceful twisting the ankle
  • Rolling of the foot
  • Foot is planted and body moves in another direction
  • Landing awkward from a jump
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching
  • Soft tissue massage
  • Foot intrinsic muscle strengthening
  • Gait program
  • Lower extremity strengthening
  • Balance training
