Sprains of the Achilles Tendon

Definition:
An injury to the Achilles tendon when the joint is carried through a range of motion greater than normal, but without dislocation or fracture.
Symptoms:
  • Pain along the back of your foot and above your heel
  • Point tenderness to Achilles tendon
  • Swelling in the Achilles tendon
  • Stiffness in the ankle
  • Hearing a snapping or popping noise during the injury
  • Difficulty flexing your foot or pointing your toes
Causes:
  • Overuse
  • Stepping up your level of physical activity too quickly
  • Not stretching enough before exercise
  • Wearing high heels
  • Overpronation
  • Muscle imbalance
Treatment:
  • ROM and stretching
  • Soft tissue massage
  • Ankle stabilization exercises
  • Foot intrinsic muscle strengthening
  • Lower extremity strengthening
  • Gait program
