Sprains of the Achilles Tendon
Definition:
An injury to the Achilles tendon when the joint is carried through a range of motion greater than normal, but without dislocation or fracture.
Symptoms:
- Pain along the back of your foot and above your heel
- Point tenderness to Achilles tendon
- Swelling in the Achilles tendon
- Stiffness in the ankle
- Hearing a snapping or popping noise during the injury
- Difficulty flexing your foot or pointing your toes
Causes:
- Overuse
- Stepping up your level of physical activity too quickly
- Not stretching enough before exercise
- Wearing high heels
- Overpronation
- Muscle imbalance
Treatment:
- ROM and stretching
- Soft tissue massage
- Ankle stabilization exercises
- Foot intrinsic muscle strengthening
- Lower extremity strengthening
- Gait program
